Will Apple Watch Series 1 Cases Fit the Apple Watch Series 2?

Apple Watch Series 2
Apple’s annual event to show off shiny new products has come to an end and out of it consumers are receiving the new iPhone 7/7 Plus along with an update to the Apple Watch, which they’re labeling as Series 2 and calling the original, Series 1. So, the real question is, will Series 1 cases fit the Apple Watch Series 2?

Size Difference

The difference between the watches are very subtle as you can tell in photo. According to The Verge, the new Series 2 is about a millimeter thicker – probably due to the larger battery to power the added GPS capabilities.

This is verified by the Apple Tech Specs:

Apple Watch Series 1:

  • 38mm
    • Height: 38.6mm
    • Width: 33.3mm
    • Depth: 10.5mm
    • Case Weight: 25g
  • 42mm
    • Height: 42.5mm
    • Width: 36.4mm
    • Depth: 10.5mm
    • Case Weight: 30g

Apple Watch Series 2:

  • Aluminum case – 38mm
    • Height: 38.6mm
    • Width: 33.3mm
    • Depth: 11.4mm
    • Case Weight: 28.2g
  • Aluminum case – 42mm
    • Height: 42.5mm
    • Width: 36.4mm
    • Depth: 11.4mm
    • Case Weight: 34.2g

So, does a millimeter in depth make a big difference? Generally for snap-on cases, it won’t. For more precise cases such as the Lunatik EPIK  or the Catalyst Waterproof Case that require the tight fit, it’ll probably require an updated version.

New Microphone Hole

The new Apple Watch Series 2 now has an added hole on the side where the original microphone hole was, which I can only assume is to improve voice detection for Siri commands. Depending on the case, it may block the newly added hole, although it should leave the original open.

In the end it’s safe to assume if you do plan on using a case on your Apple Watch, you can save a few dollars and go with the Series 1 cases that will probably go on sale soon enough. In the meantime, check out our review of the Speck CandyShell Fit for the Apple Watch Series 1.
