Apple just announced the new iPhone 7 on September 7 with a new colour option available – black. For those who like shiny new things, it comes in a glossy Jet Black which will make sure everyone sees you and a matte Black for those who want to be a little more stealth. But before it’s even available, Apple has cited a small little problem with your shiny new iPhone.
Scratches on the Jet Black
Found in the fine print of the Apple iPhone 7 Tech Specs:
The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.
So through Apple’s rigorous testing, they’ve figured out that a glossy surface will indeed show scratches and they want to make sure they avoid the next Scratchgate. But I’ll admit, the Jet Black is a pretty sleek colour, albeit not one I’d ever get because I’m not the biggest fan of fingerprints, so we’ve got you covered with a few solutions.
Now you may love the look of your new iPhone 7 in that shiny Jet Black, but there are ways to show it off while staying protected and scratch free by using a clear case. Here’s our recommendations:
The OtterBox Symmetry Series Case is my go-to case for my iPhone 6s Plus, with a simple yet protective design, it makes a great day-to-day case for protecting you from drops and scratches. The Symmetry Series Clear Case provides similar protection, with it’s raised lip around the screen, but a complete 360 view of your new iPhone 7.

Speck is well known for their line of CandyShell cases, coming in several different colour options and a slim package with a fair sized rubber bezel around the screen. They’ve introduced a new line for the iPhone 7, the Presidio series, which includes a Clear Case as well that we loved using for the iPhone 6 as well. It’s made a single piece of rubber and is now a slimmed down version of their CandyShell Clear Case. Rated to protect you from up to 8 feet above, Speck is still one of our favourite brands for protection in a slim package.

One of the most recognized brands on Amazon, you’ll find at least one of their cases recommended when you search for an ‘iPhone case’. They’ve got a whole line of protective case options, but to show off the new Jet Black, I’d recommended sticking with their lighter and thinner case, the Ultra Hybrid Case. It’s completely transparent and is one of the more affordable options.
